Piano Soundboards

The soundboard is a diaphragm that, through the bridges, transfers vibrating strings energy to sound waves through the air and amplifies them accordingly. The soundboard helps to define the voice of each individual piano.

Piano soundboards are comprised of a number of thin boards about 3/8” thick glued edge to edge and supported by ribs. The soundboard has a crown which is a curvature similar to a violin. The crown of the soundboard helps in creating resonance and good tone. The ribs strengthen the soundboard with the outer edges being glued to the rim and back frame. The wood used for soundboards must be light and reverberant. Clear, straight-grained spruce is ideal for piano soundboards. We offer Sitka and Adirondack spruce in our custom soundboard manufacturing
