Upright & Vertical Pianos
The Upright Piano or vertical appeared toward the later part of the 19th century. The strings are mounted vertically as opposed to the grand and has been a normal piano for use in the home as it occupies much less space and produces ample volume for the living room. Many uprights were labeled "Upright Grand" or "Cabinet Grand" that suggested a higher quality than most other verticals. Many of these quality uprights produce amazing sound quality that rivals and surpasses many smaller grands. There are basically four sizes of vertical pianos. The smallest is the spinet, next is the console, then the studio and finally the upright. Each has different characteristics as well as function and any of them would make an excellent addition to your home. |
