* Shane Owenby RPT (Registered Piano Technician)
Shane Owenby isnít just a piano technician. Heís a musician, a former music teacher and a collector of vintage and antique pianos.
Shane grew up playing an organ in his living room & trombone in the school band. By the time he reached college, he had a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Back then, he considered himself primarily an aspiring musician, but he passed a technicianís workshop daily on his way to school. The seed was planted.
When he graduated, he and a friend opened a music school in Cary, North Carolina, near Raleigh. When he and his wife had a son, they decided to move back to their hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, where their families live.
Searching for a change, Shane sought out a nationally recognized piano technician. He apprenticed for two years, taking on the knowledge of piano restoration, refinishing and repair that his mentor had acquired over several decades.
Today, Shane owns many vintage and antique pianos, a testament to his love for fine pianos. His love of playing and zeal for collecting gives him an edge over the many technicians who neither play nor collect.
* Colleague - Paul Wesley Piano Technician, member Piano Technicians Guild, 20+ years in piano industry.
Paul, our lead technician, is responsible for a majority of the piano action repair and rebuilding, including re-stringing.
Paul started in the piano business in Jacksonville Fl.in 1984 as a mover and as an apprentice piano technician. He learned how to rebuild pianos in a used piano store for 3 years. A move to Detroit Mi saw him take on a job as head technician at one of the largest used piano stores in SE Michigan. During these years he honed his skills as a tuner and piano rebuilder. Also involved in the community Paul was a singer and the first President of the internationally acclaimed Detroit Concert Choir.
Starting his own piano service business in 1991, Paul tuned pianos for The Detroit Public Schools, Wayne State University, the Grosse Pointe Public schools, and many area churches. 2002 saw Paul get married and move to western North Carolina where he now resides and tunes and rebuilds pianos. Some of the concert tunings have included Niel Sedaka, George Winston, Rickie Lee Jones, The Michigan Symphonietta and The Glenn Miller Orchestra.
* Colleague - Chris Young, RPT (Registered Piano Technician)
Chris and his wife, Vicki, decided to move from New York to Asheville following her retirement in 2012. Chris had run a successful piano tuning business for over 35 years on Long Islandís East End. Shortly after his arrival in Asheville, he visited the Piano Emporium, and, immediately impressed with the quality of work he encountered here, has happily joined the team with an aim to help build on this excellent venture.
Coming from a musical family (his grandmother was a concert pianist in her youth, and she and her husband were personal friends of the Steinway family), Chris began taking apart the old family upright piano at the age of 13. He was also fortunate to live 2 houses down from the Dutch owner of a beautiful Bechstein grand who took care of his own instrument, and who gave Chris tuning pointers and let him borrow tools. 44+ years later, Chris has become one of the top concert technicians in the field and has been sought after by demanding artists and concert venues all over Long Island, NY, including resident technician duties for: The Perlman Music Program, Pianofest in the Hamptons, The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center, Southampton Cultural Center, and East Hamptonís Guild Hall. Chris is also a Steinway-recommended technician.
In 1988 Chris joined the Piano Technicianís Guild, where he tested and was immediately rated a Craftsman (RPT). This year (2013) marks his silver anniversary with the Guild.
